In the late nineteenth century, Wyoming cowboy Matthew Quigley sails to Fremantle, Western Australia, at the behest of cattle baron Elliott Marston. At the dock, he gets into a fight with Coogan, Whitey, and Hobb, three men who are trying to force an hysterical American woman named “Crazy Cora” into their wagon. When Cora runs behind Quigley and calls him “Roy,” he tells her his name is Matthew Quigley. Hearing his name, Coogan announces they are the ones Elliott Marston sent to pick him up. They ride for several days in an oxen-pulled wagon. At one point, they stop for a detachment of Major Ashley-Pitt’s British cavalry soldiers, who are looking for a cattle thief. When the wagon finally arrives at the ranch, Quigley demands that Marston pay the “$50 in gold coin” he was promised for simply showing up. Since Quigley boasted on his job application that he could shoot a target 900 yards away, Elliott Marston requests a demonstration. Quigley pulls his .45-caliber, thirty-four-inch-barre

Quigley Down Under is an old fashioned western, except this time the locale is the Australian Outback. Matthew Quigley, the world's greatest long distance marksman, travels from America to Australia where he has been hired by Elliott Marston, a British land baron. Marston tells Quigley he's been hired to shoot dingos, but after Quigley arrives at Marston's remote ranch, he discovers he was really hired to kill Aborigines. When Quigley balks at this, he is beaten into unconsciousness. Cora, a young woman who tries to defend him, is also beaten, and the two are taken deep into The Outback where they are abandoned to die. As they struggle to return to civilization they must survive the brutal elements of the Australian frontier, and confront a misguided British army and an avenging Marston. Against these formidable odds their only allies are Quigley's skill with a rifle and the grateful and loyal Aborigines.

16. Quigley Down Under movie review (1990) - Roger Ebert
Cowboy movies are too genteel, maybe, or the violence follows a code instead of being mindless, or maybe the kids today just can't see themselves riding horses.
Here is a Western much like many others, with the difference that it is the first new Western I've seen in a long time -- since "Silverado" in 1985, I think,
17. Quigley Down Under (4K UHD Review) - The Digital Bits
27 mrt 2024 · All movies are a product of their time and their place, and Quigley Down Under definitely needed to wait for the right time and the right place.
Quigley Down Under may well be one of the most amiable westerns ever made, which is ironic considering that the story delves into dark subject matter like genocide, infanticide, post-traumatic stress disorder, and ethnic cleansing. Yet it manages to do so while maintaining a consistent tone that could best be described as an amiable one. Part of that is due in no small part to Australian director Simon Wincer, who had proved conclusively with the miniseries Lonesome Dove that he had a knack for moving deftly from broad comedy to high tragedy at a moment’s notice, and without losing his audience in the process. It certainly doesn’t hurt that he had the perpetually affable Tom Selleck in the lead role. Aside from the runaway 1987 hit Three Men and a Baby, Selleck hadn’t had much success in transitioning from television to leading roles on the big screen, and unfortunately Quigley Down Under wouldn’t end up breaking that streak. Yet it still became one of his most iconic roles outside of Magnum, P.I. It’s difficult to imagine Quigley Down Under working as well as it does without him.
