'I watched Wrexham with Danny DeVito at an incredible virtual stadium' (2025)

Epic video footage showing Danny DeVito celebrating Wrexham's late winner against Barnsley has gone viral after it was shared on social media.

The Hollywood A-lister was watching the game with Red Dragons co-owner and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia co-star Rob McElhenney at a “shared reality” event in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

Aside from enjoying seeing acting royalty taking in Ollie Rathbone’s sensational 92nd-minute strike, the futuristic Cosm venue in Inglewood where the event was hosted has really captured the imagination of the club's fans.

The new technology saw the League One clash showcased on 180-degree domed screens to replicate the experience of being inside the Racecourse Ground.

Cosm installed several 8K cameras around the stadium ahead of the match to capture every angle.

One of the supporters lucky enough to get a ticket was international Wrexham follower Josh Anthony, who runs the Local Pundit fan channel on YouTube from his home in LA.

He told WalesOnline that he was blown away by the technology and discussed how it could change the future of football viewing.

He said: “You could feel the energy of people immediately as you walked into the venue as if they knew something special was happening, but didn't quite know what it was.

“All of the drinks servers were decked out in jerseys featuring the Wrexham Lager logo. We saw a few celebrities as people were coming in, including players from the LA Chargers.

“I went to three of the games over the summer for the Wrexham pre-season tour and it was the same special energy.”

As well as Wrexham Lager, the Four Walls Whiskey brand owned by McElhenney and his Always Sunny colleagues Glenn Howerton and Charlie Day was also on offer at the venue, along with a special food menu featuring Welsh rarebit.

Josh, who started following the Red Dragons in 2022, even managed to grab a selfie with the Wrexham co-owner in the approach to kick off.

He said: “Rob showed up with his wife Caitlin and his two sons. They were more than accommodating to talk to as many fans as possible and to have photos.

“Then the Always Sunny cast came in and the absolute legend Danny DeVito was there, along with the Welcome to Wrexham documentary crew.”

Josh was left highly impressed by the technology and the experience as a whole, which he said was just like being at the Racecourse.

He said: “It's something that’s never been done before and the visuals were awesome. We were effectively watching from the Yale Stand and it was unbelievable.

“You could see Phil Parkinson coming up and grabbing Steven Fletcher to give him a pep talk and it was as though we were two feet away.

“I can see the Cosm experience blowing up insanely. There was another shot from behind the goal when Ollie Palmer took a shot, and it looked like it was coming right at my face.

“It was a tight game but coming out with the Hollywood ending from Ollie Rathbone was spectacular, and the whole place erupted. We could see the Tech End celebrating the goal.

“Then you could look down and see the Barnsley supporters giving the business to James McClean.

More Wrexham games are scheduled to be shown at Cosm, including January’s crunch match against promotion rivals Birmingham City.

Josh said the events were a good way of making the club's overseas fanbase feel connected with their adopted team.

He said: “As an international fan, you’re normally watching from arm’s length, but we were right in the thick of it and immersed in every way, shape and form possible, except for having to deal with the cold weather.

“What Rob and Ryan have done for the town of Wrexham and the people of Wrexham is fantastic.

“When they bought the club, I think there was that thought of 'What are they going to do?'. Will it ruin the town or be like a Manchester United in regards to forgetting about the people.

“However, the international supporters are so passionate and respectful of the town of Wrexham.

“What happened at the event and getting to feel like you’re there is great. I feel, even in a distant way, that we’re very close to the club.”

As for Danny DeVito, who recently celebrated his 80th birthday, Josh had nothing but positive words to say.

He said: “He’s just like a regular dude and he puts a smile on your face. Seeing him smiling and high-fiving with people was fantastic.

“He’s an absolute legend in the best way and I think that was his first game. Rob just needs to get him over to the actual Racecourse now.”
