One of the most buzz-worthy skincare ingredients at the moment is all about plumping and replenishing the skin: peptides. Found in a wide range of skincare products like serums, moisturizers and eye creams, peptides are all the rage for those looking to give their skin a boost (and who isn’t?!). But they aren’t just great for your skin—they’re incredible for your lips as well! No more having to swipe on that plumping lip gloss that burns and feels painfully uncomfortable just to have fuller lips—peptides are here to give you a plump, moisturized pout effortlessly. Here, a dermatologist breaks down how a peptide lip treatment works, what they are and some favorite products to try.

Skin Pros Weigh In on the Benefits of Peptides for Skin
What are peptides?
“Peptides are short chains of amino acids that function as smaller versions of proteins in skincare products,” explains Pooja Rambhia, MD, FAAD, a board-certified and fellowship-trained cosmetic dermatologist practicing at UnionDerm in New York City and Greenwich, Connecticut. “They play several important roles, including stimulating collagen production to reduce wrinkles and fine lines, reducing inflammation, supporting wound healing and strengthening the skin’s protective barrier.”
Peptides have become widely used in not just the skincare industry, but also makeup and hair care because of their long list of benefits. Plus, they work for a broad range of skin types since they’re typically tolerable and also great for mature skin. “Because they’re generally well-tolerated by most skin types and work effectively alongside other active ingredients like antioxidants and retinoids, peptides have become particularly popular ingredients in anti-aging skincare formulations,” says Dr. Rambhia.

The benefits of a peptide lip treatment
There’s no pain involved with peptides
Not only can your skin feel plump and supple from using peptides, so can your lips. If you’re like us, you’ve tried just about every lip-plumping gloss on the market only to be left with burning, stinging, irritated lips—and sometimes, they don’t even work. Peptides provide a much gentler approach to lip plumping that doesn’t involve that stinging and burning sensation or any needles.

Peptides make lips look smoother and plumper
These amino acids can help lips appear smoother with fewer fine lines. You can thank the ingredient’s ability to stimulate collagen production for this and the increase in volume or plumpness. “This collagen-boosting effect helps create fuller, more defined lips while improving their overall texture and smoothness,” affirms Dr. Rambhia.
Peptides hydrate and repair lips
Another perk is that your lips will feel softer, nourished and more hydrated while using peptides. “Peptides also support the skin’s natural repair mechanisms, helping to heal chapped or damaged lips and strengthen the lip’s moisture barrier to prevent future dryness. Additionally, certain peptides have moisturizing properties that keep lips hydrated and plump, while others provide anti-inflammatory effects that can soothe irritated lips,” says Dr. Rambhia.

Peptide lip treatments to try
One of Dr. Rambhia’s favorite peptide lip products is The Inkey List Tripeptide Plumping Lip Balm. “This non-sticky, fragrance-free lip plumping balm delivers tripeptide complex to help stimulate collagen production. In addition to hyaluronic acid to hydrate lips, [it] helps retain moisture and blur the appearance of fine lines of the lips,” she says. “I especially like this product because of the lack of stickiness, which is hard to find in lip products, and they look instantly more hydrated.”
If you get lip filler, Dr. Rambhia recommends trying RescueMD Restorative Lip Treatment. “I love how this powerful combination of peptides, lapachol and arnica works to both repair and rejuvenate my lips, especially post-injectables. The peptides stimulate collagen production for fuller, smoother lips, while the lapachol (an antioxidant) protects against environmental damage. The arnica (along with the cooling ceramic applicator) provides soothing anti-inflammatory benefits that help reduce irritation and bruising, which is particularly helpful after lip injections.”
What to know before using peptides for lips
Just like almost any ingredient, there are a few things to be aware of before trying peptides for your lips. For one, peptides don’t offer a permanent solution if you’re looking to achieve fuller lips—you have to keep applying the peptide product to keep seeing an increase in volume. “Their effectiveness can be reduced by the lip’s barrier structure, and results typically last only with continued use,” affirms Dr. Rambhia.
Also, some people experience irritation or may have an allergic reaction to peptides, “particularly from plumping peptides that increase blood flow,” says Dr. Rambhia. Price can also be a factor as a lip balm with plumping peptides is typically going to be more expensive than the average, “regular” lip balm. “Despite these drawbacks, most people can use peptide lip products without significant issues, making them a generally safe option for those seeking subtle lip enhancement,” recommends Dr. Rambhia.
